Around eight to nine persons are killed in road accidents in the country on an average per day, Parliament was told today.

State Minister of Defence Chamala Rajapaksa said this in response to a question raised in the House by SLPP MP Shantha Bandara.

He said the common causes for fatal accidents were speeding, drunk driving, making wrong turning on the middle of roads and overtaking.

Rajapaksa said the Traffic police conduct various programs to educate drivers and prevent accidents and that the 9389 police personnel attached to the traffic division have been given special training in this regard.
