Cabinet on  Monday approved a proposal made by Minister of Justice Ali Sabry to advise the Legal Draftsman to draft an  Obscene Publications Prohibition Bill.

The Minister informed Cabinet that posting child pornography through information technology and other media have seen a rapid increase in recent years and even though the provisions are included in the Penal Code and the Obscene Publications Ordinance to deal with such matters, the provisions are inadequate to meet the present circumstances.

As a solution, the Information, and Communication Technology Agency of Sri Lanka (lCTA) and Sri Lanka Computer Emergency Readiness Team have prepared a document containing the information required to draft a new bill on the advice of the Attorney General.

Hence Cabinet approved the proposal to proceed with the preparation of a new bill based on this document.
