The Ministry of Education keeps under close watch the 317 Madrasa schools functioning in Sri Lanka to ensure that no extremist ideologies are inculcated in students who study in these schools, Minister G.L. Peiris told Parliament yesterday.
Responding to a question raised by SJB MP Kavinda Jayawardena, the Education Minister said one such measurer is tightening the procedure for issuing visas for those who apply to come into the country to teach in the Madarasa schools.
" The Department of Emigration and Immigration is working closely with the intelligence services to do background checks on such applicants. There have been instances where the present government had denied visas to suspicious persons" Professor Peiris said.
He added that the Government has also stopped the process of granting visa on arrival which was started by the previous regime.
