A nine-member Expert Committee appointed to prepare the preliminary draft for a new Constitution has given time to 31 December 2020 for members of the public or organizations to send in their submissions.
The Committee which was appointed in October initially called for submissions to be made before the 30 November, but this has been extended by a month.
Submissions, typewritten on A4 papers in Sinhala, Tamil, or English languages, can be directed via post or e-mail to the following addresses: Room No. 32, [Block 02] BMICH, Bauddhaloka Mawatha, Colombo 7 or emailed to email@example.com.
The Committee has urged those making submissions to keep them concise as possible and use a new page for each of the following topics mentioned below:
They are Nature of the State, Fundamental Rights, Language, Directive Principles of State Policy, The Executive (President/Cabinet of Ministers/The Public Service), The Legislature, Franchise and Elections including Referenda, Decentralization/Devolution of Power/Power Sharing, The Judiciary, Public Finance, Public Security, and any other area of interest not specifically referred to above.
The Expert Committee consists of several legal luminaries and leading academics and will be chaired by President’s Counsel Romesh De Silva.
