Election Commission Chairman Mahinda Deshapriya  yesterday  demonstrated the safety features on the  cardboard ballot boxes  to dispel fears the election could be rigged by changing the boxes or tampering with them.

Deshapriay said all necessary arrangements have been put in place  to ensure there are no irregularities on voting day or during counting.

“ Some  rumours going around that ballot boxes will be changed and there will be rigging as counting will  begin the day after the poll but there are enough security measures to ensure no such thing happens,” Deshapriya said.

The empty boxes will be shown to all polling agents at each center before voting commences
The boxes will then be sealed & padlocked
Each polling agent can examine the boxes and put a sticker endorsing they have examined the box
The boxes will be sealed into polythene bags before they are dispatched to the counting centers
