The Government has begun a program to purchase vegetables directly from farmers   following the decision by health authorities to close economic centers around the country in order to control the spread of the COVID-19 virus.

The Government purchased 750,000 kg of vegetables  yesterday ( 11 April), the Special Presidential Task Force on Essential Services said in a news release.

Around  350,000 kg of vegetables were purchased  from farmers who supply to the Nuwara Eliya Economic Centre and another 400,000 kg of vegetables from farmers who supply to the Dambulla Economic Centre.

Thirty-five lorries will be deployed to distribute the produce from farmer who supply to the Nuwara Eliya center to local government authority areas including   Colombo, Kotikawatta-Mulleriyawa UC, Kaduwela, Moratuwa, Kesbewa, Boralesgamuwa, Biyagama, Kalutara, Walallawita, Dodangoda, Matara, Rambewa, Payagala, Gampola, Akuressa, Malimboda, Anurdhapura, Medawachchiya and  Kahatagasdigiliya.

Fifty lorries will be deployed to distribute the produce from Dambulla to  Laggala, Naula, Pallegama and Galewela areas.

Purchasing of  vegetables was carried out today ( 12 April) too at several places from farmers who supply to the Dambulla and Keppetipola Economic Centers, the news release said.
