President of Illankai Tamil Arasu Kachchi (ITAK) and former TNA MP Mavai S.Senathirajah has written to President Gotabaya Rajapaksa on the plight of the Tamil prisoners who are being held under the Prevention of Terrorism (PTA) amidst fears of a corona virus outbreak in prisons.
The ITAK President said that with the detection of a COVID-19 patient in prison, other inmates too are facing imminent danger of getting infected and with relatives of the prisoners stopped from visiting them, they are being subject to sever mental pain and stress.
“In foreign countries such persons under detention for an long time are being temporarily released by the order of the Courts and continue to be under detention in their own homes and some prisoners are given bail or set free subject to conditions dictated by courts. Unless final decisions are taken on these prisoners, we urge your good office to consider their plight humanely by paying attention to their mental condition and basic human rights under the corona virus situation, and grant such relief such as releasing them on bail as done in other virus infected countries,”Senathrajah said in the letter.
Copies of the letter was also sent to Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, Justice Minister Nimal Siripala De Silva and the Attorney General.
