The Government today announced a drastic move away from the strict curfew that has been in place for a month throughout the country.

In eighteen districts, the curfew will be relaxed from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. from Monday 20 April  onward while in the other seven districts the curfew will be relaxed during the same hours from Wednesday, 22 April. The curfew will continue indefinitely within several Police Divisions in the districts.

The lifting and the imposing of the curfew at the District Level and Police Division Level within the districts will be done as follows : -

• The curfew currently in force in all other districts except the districts of Colombo, Gampaha, Katutara, Puttalam, Kandy, Kegalle and Ampara will be lifted at 5 a.m. on Monday 20 April and will be re-imposed at 8 p.m. the same day. Thereafter the curfew in these districts will be effective only between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m. every day until further notice.

• The curfew will continue in the Police Division of Warakapola, Alawathugoda, Akurana and Akkaraipattu in the districts of Kandy, Kegalle and Ampara.

• In the Colombo, Gampaha, Kalutara and Puttalam districts, the curfew will be lifted at 5 a.m. on Wednesday 22 April and re-imposed at 8 p.m.

• The curfew will continue in several Police Divisions in these districts indefinitely.

In the Colombo District, the curfew will continue in Kotahena, Grandpass, Bambalapitiya, Keselwatta, Maradana, Gothatuwa, Mulleriyawa, Wellampityiya, Mount Lavinia, Dehiwela and Kohuwela.

In the Gampaha District, the curfew will continue in Ja-ela, Kochchikade and Seeduwa Police Divisions.

In Kalutara the curfew will continue in Bandaragama, Payagala, Beruwela and Aluthgama Polce Divisions

In the Puttalam District, the curfew will continue in the Puttalam, Marawila and Wennappuwa Police Divisions

No one will be permitted to leave or enter the areas designated as isolated and if any area where the curfew has been lifted happens to be identified as a high risk village or a zone the curfew will be imposed, the President’s Media Division (PMD) that announced the new curfew hours said in a news release.
