The Meteorology Department is warning of a  Super Cyclonic storm impacting the country during the next 12 hours .

“Due to the influence of the system the prevailing showery condition over the island particularly in the south-western part is likely to continue further. Very heavy showers above 150 mm are likely at some places. Wind speed can increase up to (60-70) kmph at times over the island. Cloudy skies can be expected over the island,” the Met Department said.

It added that the  very severe cyclonic storm  named ”AMPHAN”  would  further intensify  into an extremely severe cyclonic storm  and lay centered over Central part of South Bay of Bengal and neighborhood today about 65 km North-east of Trincomalee.

It is highly likely to intensify into a Super Cyclonic storm during next 12 hours and move north-northeast wards towards the West Bengal coast during the afternoon of 20  May.

Showers or thundershowers will occur in Southern, Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central and North-western provinces with isolated very heavy showers exceeding 150 mm while showers or thundershowers will occur at times in North and North-central provinces and showers or thundershowers will occur in the afternoon or night elsewhere, the Met Department said.

It warned the public to take adequate precautions to minimize damages caused by lightning activity during thundershowers.
