It was an unusual full moon Poya day in the country today ( 7 April) as temples that would usually be teeming with crowds stood desolate as people chose to stay home on the advice of the government and members of the Buddhist clergy due to fears over the spread of the corona virus.

Poya day sermons were conducted over television and radio and the sermons too were dedicated to advising people to stay indoors till the danger of the virus has passed.

Bellanwila Raja Maha Viharaya was deserted with a lone devotee braving the curfew to light a lamp at the temple.

At the Sri Vidyashanthi Maha Piriven Viharaya, Piliyandala, Buddhist monks, who would usually be busy on a Poya day attending to devotees, spent the morning engaged in planting vegetables
