As the world marked International Nurses’ Day today which is commemorated each year in the memory of Florence Nightingale, this year it gained twin significance as May 12, 2020 marks the 200th anniversary of Nightingale’s birth and also because of the work nurses are engaged in as front-line workers in the global battle against the COVID-19 pandemic.

In Sri Lanka, the day was commemorated at all hospital including the National Institute of Infectious Diseases (IDH) .
The nurses took part in several commemorative events and planted trees to mark the day.
