The controversial 20th Amendment to the Constitution Bill was passed in Parliament  on Thursday after a two-day debate .

During the vote, 8 opposition MPs voted  with the government giving the  ruling party a comfortable majority of 156 votes against 65 for the Opposition.

There were several interesting incidents during the debate which included a SJB MP wearing black  full-face mask and unfurling a U.S. National flag inside the Chamber to protest dual citizens being allowed to enter Parliament.

Jailed SJB MP Rishad Bathuideen was brought to Parliament donned in Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) as he is still under 14 days quarantine before being sent to remand prison.

There was a full House on Thursday night as the vote on Bill was taken. The extreme right seat in front row occupied by former President Maithripala Sirisena remained empty as he kept away from the House during the two days.

Three MPs came to Parliament from prison including Bathuideen, Premalal Jayasekara who is serving a death sentence & Batticaloa District MP Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan alias Pilliyan who is in remand custody over a murder charge
Bathuideen came clad in Personnel Protection Equipment (PPE) as he is still under 14 days quarantine before being sent to prison.
