The Twitter account of the Chinese Embassy in Colombo was suspended today but the popular micro blogging and social networking service did not give any reason for its action.
Twitter suspends accounts of those who violate “Twitter Rules.”
The Embassy has requested Twitter to unlock its account sources close to the Embassy said adding that “There seems to be a very simple reason, double standards of freedom of speech. Some western media won't allow a different voice, even with truths and facts.”
The suspension of the account comes days after the Chinese Embassy posted an Open Letter on its official Twitter page addressed to the proprietor of a private media organization objecting to the contents of some articles published in newspapers owned by the Group. One of the newspapers responded saying it provides a platform for diversity of opinion and viewpoints in keeping with journalistic tradition.
Twitter Rules state its purpose is to serve the public conversation.” Violence, harassment and other similar types of behavior discourage people from expressing themselves, and ultimately diminish the value of global public conversation. Our rules are to ensure all people can participate in the public conversation freely and safely.”
