UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe took part in a virtual conference of the International Democrat Union (IDU) on 20 April to discuss policy and scientific response to COVID-19.
Wickremesinghe who is also the Vice-Chairman of the IDU, and Chairman of the Asia Pacific Democrat Union said global cooperation and leadership is essential when faced with a global pandemic.
The IDU, being an international alliance of political parties, provides these parties with an opportunity to further engage with the international community in the fight against COVID-19.
Following the meeting Wickremesinghe wrote to the Prime Minister of Norway Erna Solberg and the Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel who are both members of the IDU, to congratulate them on the progress made in the fight against the spread of COVID-19.
“The pandemic caused by the coronavirus has become a global threat causing upheaval in the lives of people across nations and also become a leading cause of concern for the future,” the UNP leader said in the letters while congratulating the leaders for the steps take to control the spread of the virus and bring back normalcy to their countries.
