Of 154 applications the National Election Commission received to be registered as new political parties, the Commission decided to recognize only six for this year.

Following a preliminary examination of the applications received, interviews were conducted for 121 applications and at the conclusion of the process, the six parties were registered as recognized political parties by the NEC.

The parties were also each allocated symbol by the EC.

The six parties are Arunalu Janatha Peramuna (Water Tap), People’s Servant’s Party (Guitar), New Democratic Marxist Leninist Party (Kettle), Pivithuru Hela Urumaya (Flower),  Samaththuva Kachchi (Shield) and Sinhala Rawaya (Diamond).
