Thirty- eight new COVID-19 positive cases, of whom 29 are navy personnel attached to the Welisara Navy camp, were identified today, the largest number of cases recorded in the country for a single day.

The Welisara Navy camp was placed under isolation after PCR tests carried out at the camp confirmed that 29 of the sailors were infected with the virus.

The testing of the Navy personnel at the camp was  triggered when one of the sailors  from the camp who was on holiday fell ill at his home and was admitted to the Welikanda Hospital where he was confirmed  as infected with the coronavirus, Army Commander  Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva said.

The Navy personnel are suspected to have got infected when they went to the Suduwella area in Ja-Ela to help with quarantine activities after a COVID-19 patient was confirmed there.

Since the detection, the camp has been placed under isolation and all those who have been exposed to the infected sailors tested.

All those who were on home leave too have been recalled and subject to tests.

Four other patients confirmed today are from Bandaranayakapura in Colombo 12.

There were no details of the other patients confirmed today.

The total number of COVID-19 patients detected in the country stands at 368 as of today.
